FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is all about getting to know you and understanding what’s bringing you to counselling. We’ll talk about your current challenges, what you hope to achieve, and any questions or concerns you might have. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with – we’ll go at your pace. This session helps us both determine if we’re a good fit and how we can best work together.
How long are sessions and how often do we meet?
Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long. Most people find weekly sessions work well to start with, but we can adjust the frequency based on your needs, schedule, and how you’re progressing. Some people prefer fortnightly sessions, while others might need more intensive support initially. We’ll figure out what works best for your situation.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes, I offer secure video sessions for those who prefer online counselling or can’t make it to in-person appointments. Online sessions work just as effectively as face-to-face meetings for many people and can be more convenient if you have mobility issues, live far away, or have a busy schedule. All online sessions use secure, confidential platforms.
What approaches do you use in counselling?
I draw from several evidence-based therapeutic approaches depending on what will help you most. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for changing unhelpful thought patterns, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for building psychological flexibility, mindfulness techniques for managing stress and anxiety, and Emotional Freedom Technique for emotional regulation. We’ll discuss which approaches might work best for your specific situation.
How much do sessions cost?
Session fees vary depending on the type and length of appointment. I believe everyone deserves access to mental health support, so I offer a sliding scale for those experiencing financial hardship. Please contact me directly to discuss fees and payment options. Some private health insurance plans may provide rebates for counselling services.
Is everything we discuss confidential?
Yes, everything we discuss is strictly confidential. As a registered counsellor, I’m bound by professional ethics to protect your privacy. The only exceptions would be if there’s a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or if required by law (which is extremely rare). I’ll always discuss any concerns about safety with you first whenever possible.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
If you’re struggling with persistent anxiety, depression, relationship issues, major life changes, or just feeling stuck, counselling can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support. Many people find counselling helpful for personal growth, developing better coping skills, or working through specific challenges. If you’re unsure, we can have a brief conversation to discuss your situation.
What if I don't feel comfortable or it's not working?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous or uncertain at first. Building trust takes time, and I encourage open communication about how you’re feeling in our sessions. If after a few sessions you don’t feel we’re a good match, that’s okay too. I can help you find another counsellor who might be better suited to your needs. Your comfort and progress are the most important things.
How long does counselling take?
This varies greatly from person to person and depends on what you’re working on. Some people find significant relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly check in about your progress and adjust our approach as needed. You’re always in control of how long you continue with counselling.
Do you work with couples or families?
Currently, I specialize in individual counselling for women. If you’re looking for relationship or family counselling, I’d be happy to refer you to qualified therapists who specialise in those areas. However, we can certainly work on relationship skills and communication patterns in individual sessions.
What should I expect after starting counselling?
Everyone’s experience is different, but many people notice small positive changes within the first few sessions – maybe sleeping a bit better, feeling less overwhelmed, or having clearer thoughts about their situation. Real change takes time, and there might be ups and downs along the way. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.
How do I book an appointment?
You can contact me through the website contact form, send an email, or call directly. I typically respond within 24 hours. We can have a brief phone conversation first if you’d like to ask any questions before booking your first session. I aim to offer appointment times that work with your schedule, including some evening and weekend options.
